The challenge
Nature in the UK is under threat. The UK is the worst of the G7 for protecting biodiversity and one of the worst globally. Around 41% of all UK species are in population decline and 15% are at risk of disappearing altogether.
The brief
The RSPB, WWF and National Trust came together to launch the People’s Plan for Nature, informed by the biggest ever public conversation about nature in the UK. Through both a huge public consultation and a citizen’s assembly, the charities invited the public to share their ideas and develop a set of public demands to tackle the nature crisis together.
The People’s Plan for Nature is a vision for the future of nature, and the actions we must all take to protect and renew it. It is a plan developed by the people, for the people.
89up worked with the three charities as communications partners for the People’s Plan for Nature.

The solution
Our studio team designed striking tree installations where people could share ideas for how nature could be protected and restored. These installations appeared in arts centres and National Trust properties in all four nations across the UK.
We created video content to encourage engagement with the People’s Plan and we reached out to influencers including Maisie Williams to post social cards on their channels.
Through consumer polling, our PR team were able to demonstrate the levels of concern that people in the UK share about the future of nature.

The website
Our Labs team built the campaign website where members of the public could submit their thoughts about the future of nature in the UK. Allowing the foundation to the People’s Plan to be built on a shared vision for nature in the UK.

The impact
Our polling showed that people across the UK believed that governments, businesses and individuals all have a role to play in protecting and restoring nature - reinforcing the need for a People’s Plan.
We secured coverage in key titles including the Guardian, Independent, Business Green and First News as well as national coverage in each of the four countries in the UK.
In total, over 20,000 people submitted their ideas for the future of nature in the UK, feeding into a comprehensive plan created by the people.
