The challenge

Ahead of the CBD COP15 UN conference on biodiversity, a coalition of nature charities led by the RSPB approached 89up to put pressure on the UK government to show leadership on the biodiversity crisis.

The solution

To highlight the campaign on the eve of COP15, we worked with international choreographer Sadeck Waff to create a ‘human murmuration’ - a choreographed performance inspired by the stunning display birds put on as they flock together in a dance-like movement, emphasising the importance of working together to create impact.

The website

We built a campaign website which allowed members of the public to write to Rishi Sunak asking him to lead an Urgent Conversation about the crisis. We worked with ambassadors including Chris Packham and Dr Amir Khan to produce video content to share on social media.

The impact

Let's talk ->

The Global Biodiversity Framework was agreed at the 11th hour, overcoming a strong overnight pushback, incorporating the ‘30 by 30’ target which was a core part of our campaign messaging and considered a ‘crucial’ breakthrough.

The UK government used the global stage at Cop15 to pledge nearly £30 million to support developing countries in delivering the ‘30 by 30’ target, which aims to protect at least 30 percent of the world’s land and ocean habitats by 2030.

The murmuration was shown at Cop15 via RSPB’s inspiring Wall of Hope.
