Coverage Highlights
The challenge
The EU’s €750 billion covid recovery package presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform our economy. But despite this extraordinary opportunity, the EU still relied on on discredited, short-termist economic theories that would leave us vulnerable to accelerating climate change and falling living standards, while countries planed to waste a huge portion of the recovery package rebuilding an unsustainable economy.
The brief
European NGO Finance Watch came to us to support the creation of a new campaign platform: Rethink the Recovery. They wanted our support to shift the dial on the EU’s fiscal rules.
The solution
89up delivered a fully integrated campaign consisting of PR, social content and campaign website. Our editorial team crafted the core narrative from which the campaign brand and visual style was developed.
We also worked with the Fiscal Matters Coalition which included Finance Watch and the New Economics Foundation to put our messaging in front of decision makers. To do this, we worked with Nobel Prize winning economist Joseph Stiglitz to craft an op-ed that we placed in the Financial Times.
Our in-house team of developers then built the campaign website rethinktherecovery.org and our content team created the hero animation in four languages, ready for use on their social and online channels.

The impact
Our PR activity landed media coverage in a range of top European titles including El Pais, Financial Times, and Politico Pro. We also secured broadcast interviews with Finance Watch spokespeople .
