The client
Global Energy Monitor (GEM): develops and analyses open-source data on energy infrastructure and resources. It provides essential access for a wide range of stakeholders to the information essential to building a sustainable energy future.
The challenge
Since its founding, GEM had rapidly scaled its influence from a 'behind-the-scenes' data provider to a vital global resource. But it's website and visual identity were struggling to keep pace with its expanding role in the energy transition.
As GEM's audience grew increasingly diverse, their extensive research remained siloed across separate project trackers and a fragmented website structured around internal workflows rather than user needs, resulting in navigation dead-ends for researchers and clean energy advocates.
89up partnered with GEM on a complete revision of the brand and website strategy. The goal was to better align with GEM’s strategic shift and ensure that their vast amounts of data could be easily accessed by both technical and non-technical audiences.
The development of a powerful new brand and technical platform enables GEM's global audiences in their work to expedite the clean energy transition through intuitive discovery of the energy data most relevant to them.
The brand
The new brand feature a clean, authoritative, and data-first aesthetic, transitioning to a modern "GEM" acronym logo, while incorporating real-life satellite imagery and their well-established, unique color scheme of navy, mint, and blood orange.
The website
The website features a layered, macro-to-micro approach to information, introducing energy area landing pages for insights and topline statistics, and the ability to dive into the finest detail of their data via combined interactive dashboards and tracker maps.
We also ensured the site remains lightning-fast and highly secure, deploying it on a fully-managed, enterprise-grade cloud infrastructure with a global content delivery network.
The impact
By modernising the visual identity and digital infrastructure, 89up has helped GEM move beyond fragmented user journeys and disjointed trackers. The platform now facilitates a continuous, intuitive discovery process.
Instead of struggling to navigate siloed databases, key decision-makers across the globe can seamlessly access transparent, comprehensive data to advance the clean energy transition.
“ During an exciting phase of organisational transition, 89up guided us through a brand and digital refresh that positions GEM well for the next phase of fulfilling our mission to power the energy transition with open data. Their experience in navigating similarly complex projects was evident in a consultative and collaborative process that finished in a timely manner ”
