The Project

89up started a conversation about real diversity in British media.

Delivering true diversity and representation in UK media is a huge and urgent challenge for the industry. The Creative Diversity Network is dedicated to improving representation from across society in UK television. CDN does this through data, collecting information from the thousands of people who work in the UK broadcast sector and highlighting where the industry is coming up short.

To mark Black History Month, CDN undertook its deepest dive into their extensive data on representation in British television production.

89up’s PR team helped CDN identify the most eye-catching statistics, focussing on the fact that less than two per cent of writers currently working in British television come from a BAME background, despite the BAME population making up nearly 13 per cent of the UK population.

The 89up team delivered media across the political spectrum. Highlights included a film by HuffPost, coverage in Guardian, Forbes, Independent and i-D, as well as a discussion of the survey findings on the BBC’s Politics Live
