The challenge
As evidence of the Chinese government’s brutal cultural genocide in Xinjiang grew, and pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong faced long jail sentences, 89up worked with the British parliamentarians in the China Research Group to produce a report outlining policy recommendations.
Defending Democracy In A New World, provides a structure for democratic nations seeking to counter China’s increasing hegemony and make it clear that human rights abusers will face consequences.
The solution
Our team researched and produced a comprehensive policy toolkit addressing complex issues that cover law, trade, human rights and international relations.
Our PR team launched the report internationally with a thought-provoking panel event featuring pro-democracy activist Nathan Law, Uyghur campaigner Rahima Mahmut and former Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer.
The editorial team also secured articles in a range of publications and broadcast outlets across the world, helping to put China policy at the top of President Biden’s in-tray as he took office.
