Urging the government to rethink farming regulations
Leaving the EU presented the UK with a once-in-a-generation chance to transform farming regulations and subsidy schemes. However, the hope that this would lead to more climate and nature-friendly policies was being squandered by the Conservative government.
The client
Nature Friendly Farming Network: is a membership organisation for farmers, working alongside other organisations and public supporters.
The challenge
To challenge this backtracking and heel-dragging, the Nature Friendly Farming Network (NFFN) needed to show that farmers wanted a better, more climate-friendly subsidy scheme.
NFFN approached 89up to make the case for nature friendly farming.

The solution
89up created a joint letter of over 580 farmers asking the Minister of State for Food, Farming and Fisheries to take action. We also placed it in the media and obtained coverage in the Express, BBC, Farming UK, the Independent, and the Guardian.
We set up a joint meeting between the minister and NFFN farmers to discuss the future of subsidy and regulation while mobilising Conservative backbenchers in rural constituencies to write letters to the minister pushing for change. We also set up a paid social campaign targeted at policy makers to help increase the reach and cut-through of our work.
Our team developed a bespoke media training programme led by experienced journalists for 20 farmers and NFFN members to ensure they felt comfortable giving media interviews and communicating campaign messaging with clarity and confidence.
