Summary of Job
We are looking for a junior designer to work as part of our in-house Studio (creative & content production) and Labs (web) teams.  The role is predominantly focused on motion and static design for digital and print, though could also expand to include web design and UX.

The majority of the role will be working with our Studio team on social content (moving image/animated and static), digital display ads, report designs, event collateral and more. However you will also have the opportunity to learn and grow skills in UX development and website design.

You will be working closely with our Head of Design, and two other designers, supporting them to produce these outputs. For social content, you will also work closely with our digital Advocacy team, using data insights to fine tune design outputs for targeted paid social campaigns, and also help support our client servicing team in delivery of integrated campaigns. You will have the ability to contribute to creative ideation and the team's approach to new briefs. On the web side, you will also support our Digital Account Director who manages our Labs team of three developers and account managers.

You will be a smart self-starter who can think on their feet and juggle multiple projects and client requests. You are someone that is fascinated by how motion and graphic design can be used to inspire, to communicate, to evoke action. You will be innately interested in how digital solutions can play a part in the wider communications spectrum. You will need to enjoy wearing multiple hats and be confident mucking in when required.

This really is a role that will allow you to explore your strengths in a multi-disciplinary environment. You will experience more exposure to senior team members (experts in a variety of fields who are on hand to offer masterclasses and mentoring), opportunities (especially within the integrated marketing mix - so you learn about other specialisms and try your hand at them), creativity and content creation, to clients and client management. All of these things will arguably enable you to hone your talent, while broadening your skill-set and fast tracking your career progression, in a passionate, supportive and a friendly environment.

Required Skills

  • You should have at least mid-level competency with Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop (After Effects a bonus).
  • Some experience or knowledge in web design and development of web and  digital solutions would be beneficial.
  • Ability to work within a team or complete a design briefing independently.
  • Very high standard of written and spoken English
  • Ability to design for both print and digital outputs
  • Willingness to train and use new software
  • Attention to detail: Naturally detail oriented and focussed on maintaining high quality standards.
  • Strong interpersonal skills: Whether it’s over the phone, by email or in person, being in a communications agency is all about people. So you need to be approachable, friendly and empathetic, and be able to relate to people on different levels within the agency, and with clients.
  • English language fluency: You need to have excellent written and spoken English.

USEFUL SKILLS, but not mandatory

  • Experience with print design (in particular understanding of how files should be set up for different print outputs)
  • Experience in working in After Effects
  • Some experience of UX development and web design
  • Knowledge of HTML/CSS, JS or other coding languages
  • Experience with Webflow (web design software) or equivalents

Business Overview

89up is Europe's first impact agency. We campaign for great causes, build technology, tackle complex problems and inspire action. 89up was founded with a clear mission: to create a powerful integrated communications agency for the world’s most important causes. In the last eight years, we’ve become one of the Financial Times 1,000 fastest-growing companies in Europe, twice and won awards for some of the biggest non-profit campaigns around the world.

We are a fully integrated communications agency with four main teams:

  • Our Studio team crafts beautiful content including graphic design, animation and live action video
  • Our Advocacy, Insights and Mobilisation team delivers data-driven insights for impactful strategies to mobilise audiences
Labs team builds innovative websites and bespoke advocacy tools to engage consumers and decision-makers
  • Our PR team makes sure our campaigns make the headlines.

From freeing political prisoners to taking on the banks who fund the climate crisis, to EU campaigns against fossil fuels to PR campaigns for many of Europe’s biggest charities, to global challenges that excite people the world over, there is genuinely never a dry moment at 89up.

We put a huge emphasis on training and promotions - with promotion and pay reviews twice a year. In 2022 to help combat the impact of inflation we gave a baseline pay increase of 10% across the board with bonuses and promotions on top. Some members of the team have been promoted twice in a single year. You will get a lot of attention from seniors with significant experience helping you to grow in the role. This is a company that is growing quickly, so there’s plenty of room for career development.
