Business Overview

89up is an award winning agency founded with a clear mission: to create a powerful integrated communications agency for the world's most important causes. We help the good guys achieve great things, whether they are charities, political campaigns or commercial organisations. 90up is the sister agency, established to work with our commercial clients. Same team, different clients.

Our team is made up of big agency players, journalists, data and digital innovators and production genius, giving non-profits and commercial clients a big agency experience with boutique agency dedication. We’re unique in the field in that 20% of our team work in 89up Labs, a group of skilled technologists developing tools to make PR and social more effective.

Our stand out creative and campaigns are designed to affect change - whether that be behaviour, attitudes or policy. In 2019, 89up won PRMoments Boutique Agency of the Year award and was nominated for the Campaigns for Good awards. We delivered global coverage for the Toyota Mobility Foundation’s $4,000,000 global challenge, continued to make the headlines with GoFundMe. Plus we won a raft of new business including: Bite Back 2030, a new non-profit organisation launched by Jamie Oliver and other leading figures in the food industry to improve the health of British children; Mootral, a Swiss Agritech innovation firm, managing the global commercial launch of a natural feed supplement for cows that reduces methane emissions; Salad Money, ethical FinTech social enterprise who are leading the ethical lending revolution by widening access to affordable, low-cost credit; Future Arts Centres and their Here and Now project, a nationwide, year long arts project that will see 40 new artworks commissioned by arts centres across the country over the course of 2020 and marking 25 years of the National Lottery; plus the United Kingdom Antarctic Heritage Trust to help celebrate the 200th anniversary of the first sighting of Antarctica.

89up’s team are driven by integrity. In October 2018, 89up’s digital team spotted a new ‘fake news’ website spreading disinformation via targeted social media advertising on Facebook. The exposure of Mainstream Network saw coverage of the agency across the globe from the New York Times to The Guardian, TechCrunch, BBC, Time Magazine, FT and Wired.

As a small agency, 89up punches above its weight in both winning big client accounts and also its impact in the world. Not content with being a first in class agency for PR, social and digital, 89up’s team have spent time on causes they care about through our in-house think tank. By challenging the use of communications by foreign powers to sow discord in our democracy and working closely with Parliament’s Culture, Media and Sport select committee to give expert witness as to the use of PR techniques and technologies to promote ‘Fake News’, 89up is ensuring that the public itself can trust and have faith in our institutions, press and media platforms.

So if you fancy joining a small, smart team with big ambitions - you will unquestionably get a number of benefits in return, which you would be far less likely to see in a big agency environment. Our base is at Tileyard Studios in King’s Cross.

Description of the Role

We are looking for a strong Account Manager, or an AM who is ready for the step up to Senior Account Manager, to join the PR team at 89up. The candidate needs to be a smart self-starter who has proven agency experience in handling/juggling a number of clients and managing junior team members; a proficient client handler acting as a day to day contact; a great team player able to upwardly and downwardly manage and mentor juniors; solutions-focused and able to keep an eye on the bigger picture whilst also being across the day to day detail; a lover of to do lists, timelines and KPIs but equally comfortable brainstorming and writing slick press releases and pitches; someone with good media contacts and selling in skills; results driven - ensuring deadlines and KPIs are met.

While it’s helpful if you have experience across the marketing mix, we are keen to find someone who is a PR pro but who is hungry to learn more about integrated communications and broaden their skill set, under the guidance of some of the best senior staff in their sectors. This will see candidates supporting PR, social, content and tech teams - learning associated communications skills.

This role would extend across both 89up and 90up clients so we're looking for someone who thrives on working across a number of different projects and in an agile manner - someone happy to work on causes but equally comfortable pushing brands and products with a purpose. Someone happy to work on ongoing clients; projects and new pitches. You will need to enjoy wearing multiple hats and be confident mucking in when required.

This really is a role that will allow you to explore your strengths and you will receive further training in all areas in order to support your account manager responsibilities. You will experience more exposure to senior team members (experts in a variety of fields who are on hand to offer masterclasses and mentoring), opportunities (especially within the integrated marketing mix - so you learn about other specialisms and try your hand at them), creativity and content creation (with a flat structure, everyone idea's here are valued), to clients and client management. All of these things will arguably enable you to hone your talent, while broadening your skill-set and fast tracking your career progression, in a passionate, supportive and friendly environment.
